October is National Physical Therapy Month

General Information

花火/fireworks Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Geaux to Physical Therapy!  What started as a way to promote physical therapy during National Physical Therapy Month (NPTM) last year, has turned into a platform to promote PT at all times of the year, provide information for those interested in physical therapy, and share information that will supplement and improve a person’s physical therapy.  And it all started with this post.  Over the past year, many more blogs have been created to educate the general public about physical therapy and I’m so happy that more professionals are helping to get the word out about physical therapy.  The APTA has created a brand new website over the past year with a blog including a section to “Ask A PT” a question.  You should go here to check it out.  I’m so grateful to all who have visited the site, read the postings, and provided comments to postings over the year.  Those interactions and discussions open the door for us to help each other through physical therapy or clarify questions for everyone!

This year NPTM is focused on educating the public about the importance of staying physically active to improve one’s health and avoid obesity and its consequences.  You can read about it here on the American Phyiscal Therapy Association (APTA) website.  Exercise is my drug of choice for its multiple health benefits and I hope to share more information about this and physical therapy over the coming month.

So what is Geaux to PT going to do to celebrate NPTM?!  I’m going to be posting every day for the month of October about physical therapy and staying physically active.  If you have a question or suggestion for a posting, please leave a comment below.  So check back throughout the month for helpful information on physical therapy and keeping you healthy through physical activity!

What are you doing to celebrate or promote physical therapy during the month of October?  Share in the comments below.

Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Specialist at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System

My name is Monique Serpas, PT, DPT, OCS. I am a physical therapist and board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist practicing at the Southeast Louisiana Healthcare System in New Orleans, LA. I realize how difficult it can be to overcome an injury or manage a chronic condition and am focused on helping my clients achieve wellness through a physically active lifestyle. I treat orthopaedic, balance, and vestibular disorders and practice using a combination of hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and education. This enables my patients to assist in their own recovery and injury prevention. I also have developed fall prevention and golf-related rehab programs in the past. I hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Concordia University Wisconsin (2008) and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Louisiana State University (2004). I am a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Louisiana Physical Therapy Association (LPTA), and the Orthopaedic and Neurology sections of the APTA.
